My 3-year-old loves his little plastic farm animals and will spend a lot of time examining them and lining them up and just generally playing with them. But the one thing we lack is some stick fences.
Now without having to go buy an entirely new pack of animals for just 5 little fences we decided to make our own!
Popsicle Stick Fencing for Small World Play
These worked out very well, except for one small change I would make. I will let you what it is in the instructions below.
To make these fences you will need:
- 4 Popsicle sticks per fence
- one and a half Velcro dots per fence (I cut them in half)
- hot glue gun
- something to cut the Popsicle sticks
To make, cut a Popsicle half for the fence’s legs.
Line up the other 3 sticks and add drops of hot glue in a line.
Add the fence legs as displayed in the picture.
Now here is the part I would change in hindsight. The Velcro dots have 2 different textures, the one is very soft and easily wrapped around the end of the stick, however the other side of the dot was very stiff and unable to stay stuck down on the round end of the stick.
I was however able to salvage the fence by using more hot glue to ensure it stayed down. BUT for you making this from the start, I recommend that you cut the half a dot in half again (1/4 dot) and stick them flat on either flat sides of the round end of the stick.
The soft dot will still be around the end so will still give you the freedom to move them around in various positions.
There you go! a new fence for some small world farm play. Grab the little animals and get playing 😀

These are fun! I’ve been wanting to make something like this for farms alongside our train tracks, so it’s great to have a tutorial. Thanks!
