We’re on day 9 out of 10 of teaching how to spell and write our names. See all 10 days to write “my name” on this page. Today, we’ll dive into a super fun activity where we work on name writing with trains. The activity also pairs well with The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsberg and a theme of trains.
For the name writing with trains activity, I decided to reinforce name spelling by making a train to place letters on. This activity can easily be modified as a busy bag, too!
To make your train, cut a few foam blocks. Then, hot glue the train bits onto a strip of black foam to stabilize it. Finally, add some wheels. I choose the number of train carts based on the amount of letters in my child’s name for this name writing activity. 
Use foam letters to include the letters of the childrens’ names. I have 4 kids, so I made a mix of all the letters.
Although my youngest is only 2 she loved this activity for its simple matching and fine motor skills. The older kids will be reinforcing pre-existing skills with this activity. Plus, it’s a fun decoration for their rooms or your refrigerator. As my 2 year old says, “choo-choo!”
Since all the kids names are different lengths, it was an interesting exercise to compare the size of the various trains. You can take this name writing activity a step further by prompting your children to trace over the foam letters with a marker or pen of their choice. This is a great way for little ones to practice beginning writing skills. 
No matter how you use this name writing with trains activity, you’re sure to have lots of fun doing it while making some memories with you family. Afterwards, your child can have hours of fun as they play with their new name train.
