Animals are such a fun theme to learn anything with. Kids are drawn to the magic of animals, every time we go to the zoo, my kids are in awe the whole time! That is why I like to use animals as a theme for learning activities. These Animal Themed Number Mats are a big hit in our house and I know they will be in yours too!
Animal Number Mats
The numbers that this set focuses on are 1-10. Each mat has a different number, that is a bubble letter with a dotted line border. There is also that number of animal themed objects on each mat. The animals in this set are:
1: Giraffe
2: Whales
3. Elephants
4: Octopuses
5: Chickens
6: Turtles
7: Hippos
8: Owls
9: Pigs
10: Sheep
The mats are in black and white, so these can be colored after they are printed.
We love all of these preschool activities!
These number mats can be used in a variety of ways to help children master necessary math skills. Besides using them as coloring sheets, or even after you use them as coloring sheets, they can be laminated. This will not only protect the paper, extending the life of the activity, but will also allow you to use them with play dough. Kids can form the numbers with playdough and then create that number of balls of playdough and place them on the animal objects.
It is important for preschoolers to practice the simple math skills, but it can be done in fun ways to keep children engaged. That’s what this animal themed activity set can help them do.
Check out these ideas for playing with plastic animals, too!
Number recognition is strengthened even as they look at this mat for the first time. Looking at the number and identifying it is a skill in itself. These mats also give the opportunity to help with counting, because children can count the animals on each mat.
If you turn the mats into playdough mats, adding balls of playdough or plastic animals onto the objects also helps strengthen 1:1 correspondence.
