Don’t you just LOVE salt dough? So many things to make!
This last week while in the full swing of the Christmas season we decided to make some additional salt dough ornaments. We made so many star ones that to put them on the tree would just be over kill for the already rather full tree! This is where our star window mobile came in!
Our lovely salt dough ornaments
To make these salt dough ornaments you will need:
- salt dough
- cookie cutters
- sharpies
- for the mobile, additional beads, ribbon and string
In my salt dough I added extra cinnamon spice as well as some brown food coloring. It gives a lovely scent on the tree and coloring. The boys loved the cookie cutting bit. stamp stamp stamp…
Onto the rack they went and into the dehydrator. Baking in the oven is just as good! My oven was occupied at the time with some baking bread.
Once fully dry you are ready to decorate! Here is our ornament on the tree. The little feather angel on the right also has a tutorial.
For our Star window mobile I took some string and tied a knot on each star so that they hung in a line. I made 2 strings worth and the 3rd strung a few beads on to catch the sunlight. I also added 6 ribbons to flutter in the breeze.
Everything is kept together at the top with a rather twisty pipe cleaner. Pipe cleaners are great to use to hook on curtain rails!

Hi I have to ask about the dehydrater I have been wondering about drying salt dough ornaments in a dehydrater because I do not like oven drying it misshapes them and sometimes will bubble up even with the heat LOW. so does the dehydrater misshape them at all? or bubble them? thanks so much!

Mine have never become misshaped or bubbled. What type of flour are you using? Make sure it is plain and not the self raising one. That might cause the raising.

I like these, do you have a recipe for the salt dough?
Nicolette Roux says
If you clink the link for “salt dough” under the materials list you will find a recipe there.

Can you believe I don’t have any cookie cutters? My girls would really love this. Maybe I’ll find some clearance cookie cutters after the holidays.

:O none! We were lucky to find a tub of 50 animal shapes on our last city trip. They are being put to good use!
