Early literacy standards include not only letter recognition but being able to recognize the difference between upper and lowercase letters. This is important for preschoolers to learn so that when they get to the point of starting to learn how to read and write, they will already have this concept down. Fun activities like this matching game can help them really get the skill concrete in their mind.

This simple literacy activity can help children decipher between the upper and lowercase letters easily. It breaks down the alphabet into five sections as to not overwhelm children who are just learning. Each page has only 6 sets of letters.

Prepping This Activity

Prepping this activity is simple. Print out the pages and have a writing utensil ready. If you are prepping for your classroom or if you would like to reuse this activity, you could choose to laminate and use with dry erase markers.

Using This Activity

As I mentioned above, each page only focuses on 6 letter sets. This will help children not feel overwhelmed. To complete each page, children will identify the uppercase letter on the left side of the page and match it to the lowercase letter on the right side. They will then draw a line between the matches. That’s it, super simple but so effective.

It is important for children to learn the differences between the two types of letters for future literacy skills. We eventually learn that uppercase letters are used to start sentences and are for proper nouns. Lowercase letters are all letters that do not begin sentences.

Some people believe that lowercase should be taught first, others think uppercase, while some people think teaching both together is okay. Whichever you choose, this is a great way to introduce letters or help your children review the concepts they have already learned.
