Vowels are a key part of learning to read and write. Children need to recognize vowels and their sounds in order to read almost all words. Learning phonics is a key part of a child succeeding with literacy. Children can use the phonics method to learn the sounds of letters to help them read and recognize words. Activities such as this are great for introducing a new skill to children. These cards offer context cues from the images and first/last letters, this is to help children really figure out what the answer is. They can work on and strengthen problem solving skills, deductive reasoning, phonics, and fine motor skills.

Fine motor skills are strengthened with the action of choosing an answer. Either the child will write the correct answer on the line or use a small alphabet manipulative. The movement and motions of using either one of these can help strengthen the hand muscles of children. Children need fine motor strength to be able to hold a pencil correctly, tie their shoes and use a zipper.

Learning phonics is a great way to help children start to read words. Phonics can help children know the sounds of letters and the relationship between various letters and the formation of words. Meaning, the sounds and letters are the link between what we say and how we read or write. These are the tools that little learners need to begin reading and sounding out words.

Prepping This Activity

You could cut the cards apart and laminate them. This would allow you to use the activity over and over. You could just use a dry erase marker, in place of a pencil.
