Winter Bird Feeder Ornaments

Since I was a kid one of my favorite winter activities was making a bird feed ornament to feed the birds in winter when food is more scarce. I thought the kids might enjoy it to, and of course they did! Keep reading and I will show you how to make your own Bird Feeder Ornaments for Winter Activity.

This activity is fun for toddlers or preschoolers on its own or part of a bird or winter unit study.

We were inspired to help feed the winter birds as part of our study – Animals In Winter, Let’s Read and Find Out Science. These books are my favorite for homeschool because they are filled with fantastic facts but are much more interesting to kids than a dry textbook.

Bird Feeder Ornaments for Winter Activity

You will need:

• 3 cups bird seed
• 1 packet unflavored gelatin
• 1/2 cup warm water
• 2 T. corn syrup
• 1/3 cup flour

You will also need:

• baking sheet
• cookie cutters
• string/twine
• nonstick cooking spray
• spoon for stirring
• a straw cut into 4 pieces

Directions:

In a large bowl stir unflavored gelatin into warm water until completely dissolved.

Stir in the remaining ingredients quickly, making sure everything gets well incorporated. Little hands love mixing!

Spray the baking sheet and the inside of the cookie cutters generously with non stick cooking spray.

Lay cookie cutters flat on baking sheet and fill with bird seed mixture, be sure to pack it in and press it into all corners firmly.

Next, take a piece of straw and poke it all the way through between the top and center of your bird seed ornament, this will create a spot for your string to create a hanger. Do not get too close to the edge or the weight of your ornament will break it off.

Allow bird feed ornaments to set up hard, we left ours overnight but a few hours should do. Carefully push them out of the molds and remove the straw. Use a pencil or the straw to push twine/string through the hole for hanging, leave it long enough that it hangs freely from the tree.

Make several and hang them in various areas of your yard from the trees for your sweet feathered friends to enjoy!

Outside temperature may be low, but the activities in here are hot! There are plenty of indoor activities in here to keep your children learning this season!
