Letter I Craft for Letter of the Week
This craft is the perfect addition to a Letter of the Week unit. Besides exploring the letter I, this will help strengthen fine motor skills, cutting skills and more.
What You Need
- Letter I Template (download below)
- scissors
- craft glue
- construction paper
- googly eyes
- crayons or colored pencils

This craft is super simple to make. We share how we make this particular insect, but keep in mind that children can use their own imagination and creativity to make this insect their own!
How to Make Your Letter I Craft
- Begin by colouring the letter I with your choice of crayons or coloured pencils.
- Cut the letter I out.
- Use your construction paper to create legs (insects have 6!), wings and antennae.
- Glue the insect parts into place directly on the I cut-out. Allow to dry.
- Add the googly eyes to finish the face of your insect. Just add a dab of glue to each and press into place.

Why This Craft Helps
Letter recognition: linking the letter I to a picture (insect) helps children remember its shape and sound.
Cutting skills: cutting along the lines of the template builds scissor control and hand strength.
Fine motor skills: placing small legs and googly eyes takes focus and careful finger movements.
A mini science lesson: counting the 6 legs is a great chance to talk about what makes an insect an insect.

Ways to Extend the Learning
- I word hunt: look around the house for things that start with I, or make a list together (insect, igloo, ice cream, iguana).
- Insect hunt: head outside and look for real insects in the garden. Can you count their legs?
- Alphabet wall: display your I insect with the rest of your letter crafts as you work through the alphabet.

Safety tip: Googly eyes are a choking hazard for children under 3, so supervise little ones closely or draw the eyes on instead.
