DIY Ribbon Angel Ornaments

These DIY ribbon angel ornaments are so pretty, and they’re easier to make than they look. All you need is a length of wired ribbon, a jingle bell and a few bits and pieces. Because the ribbon holds its shape, the angel comes together with just folding, gluing and tying. It’s a lovely craft for older kids (with an adult’s help for the hot glue) or a quiet afternoon of Christmas crafting for grown-ups.

Best for: ages 6+ with help (or adults!)
Time: 15 minutes per angel

What You Need for Ribbon Angel Ornaments

  • Wired ribbon in your choice of colour (about 60 cm per angel)
  • A jingle bell in a matching colour, such as silver or gold
  • String or thin cord
  • A gem or bead for the halo
  • A hot glue gun (adult use only)
  • A stapler

How to Make a Ribbon Angel Ornament

  1. First, cut a length of wired ribbon about 60 cm long. The wire edges are what let the ribbon hold its shape, so don’t use unwired ribbon for this.
  2. Next, fold the ribbon into loops to form the angel’s dress and wings. The wire lets you scrunch and shape the folds so the angel’s skirt spreads out.
  3. Then, staple or hot glue the folds together at the centre to hold the angel’s shape.
  4. After that, glue the jingle bell on top for the head, and add a gem or bead as the halo above it.
  5. Finally, tie a loop of string through the top and hang your angel on the tree, or tie it to the top of a gift as an extra special bow.

Why You’ll Love This Craft

  • Only a few supplies: everything comes from one length of ribbon and a couple of small bits.
  • Quick to make: each angel takes about 15 minutes once you’ve done one.
  • Great for gifts: attach them to presents, or make a set for grandparents.

Ways to Change It Up

  • Use different coloured wired ribbons for a whole choir of angels.
  • Add a small wooden bead or pearl instead of a jingle bell for the head.
  • Make mini angels from narrower ribbon for wreaths and garlands.

Safety Tip

A hot glue gun should only be used by an adult or a closely supervised older child, as the glue and tip get very hot. Jingle bells and gems are choking hazards for children under 3.
