Farm Animal Sort: An Easy Sorting Activity for Preschoolers

This farm animal sort is one of the easiest activities you can set up for your preschooler. You only need a piece of paper and a bunch of plastic animals, and it packs in plenty of learning. It’s a great no-prep activity for a farm theme week, a rainy day, or when you just want something quick to do on the floor together.

What You Need

  • A piece of paper
  • A marker or crayon
  • A collection of plastic animals, including farm animals and a few that don’t belong, like a lion, a dinosaur or a penguin

How to Play the Farm Animal Sort

There are two ways to play this game.

Version 1: Sort by classification
First, draw a line down the middle of the paper. Write “farm” on one side and “not farm” on the other. Then have your preschooler sort the animals by classification, meaning farm animals on one side and everything that doesn’t belong on the farm on the other side!

Version 2: Listen and guess
For this version, ask your preschooler to close their eyes, pick up a plastic animal and you make the sound of that animal. They have to tell you where it belongs: on the farm, or elsewhere.

A rather simple activity, but full of learning potential!

Why Sorting Matters

  • Sorting and classification: putting things into groups is an early maths skill that also builds logical thinking.
  • Listening skills: version 2 trains careful listening and memory.
  • Language: talk about each animal’s name, sound and home as you play.
  • Confidence: children feel proud when they get it right, and it’s easy to make it harder as they grow.

Ways to Extend It

  • Sort by number of legs, by size, or by where the animal lives (farm, jungle, ocean).
  • Add a sensory element and hide the animals in a rice or oats bin before sorting.
  • For older kids: write the animal names down and sort by first letter or letter sounds.

Safety Tip

Small plastic animals can be a choking hazard for children under 3, so supervise closely. See the AAP’s choking prevention guide for more tips.
