Fire (No Mess) Sensory Bag

While there are plenty of times I let the kids dig in and make a mess sometimes I need a fun activity that I can keep contained but lets the little ones play and explore. I put together this Fire No Mess Sensory Bag to go along with our community helpers unit, give it a try with your toddler or preschooler.

All you need is:

  • A gallon zippered storage bag
  • Yellow, and orange craft paint
  • Packing tape

Directions:

Open your gallon zippered bag and add 1-2 Tablespoons of each paint color, press the seal closed after removing as much of the air as you can.

Tape the zippered top shut well to keep the mess IN the bag. If you like you can also tape it in place on the table they will be playing on. For babies and toddlers a high chair tray is a great spot to set them up.

Besides just letting your little explorer and investigate the feel of the paint inside the bag you can encourage them to practice writing or drawing in the paint in the bag, identify the colors in the bag and what color they make as they mix together.

Your child can draw shapes, letters (like F for Fireman), or your their own name with their fingers or use something like a soft cotton swab as a pencil. Layout flash cards with letters, sight words, or spelling words for your child to write in the paint. Erase it by simply pushing the paint around and draw or write on it all over again.

Little fingernails, pencils, or other sharp edges will, of course, puncture your bag.

The bag can be put away and brought out time and again for fresh fun sensory play in the future as well.
