Kids Treasure Box made with Popsicle Sticks

I like to craft stuff and crafting it with the kids is a huge plus by me. I have also been looking at items in the shops in a new way, how can we play with this?

My almost 3 year old is a collector, he loves to sort toys and various items by color, size and then line them up for inspection. The one day in the shop he saw some popsicle sticks being cheap and lots of them, they came home with us.

His brother (4) also took an interest in the popsicle sticks and started building little boxes by laying the sticks on top of each other.

Materials needed to make a kids treasure box are:

  • Popsicle sticks, pre-painted or plain
  • Paint if you want custom color, we used plain water paints
  • Craft glue
  • Earbuds if your glue spout is big

I used one of my baking trays for the boys to paint their sticks on.

Because of the large opening in the glue bottle I opted to pour some out into a lid and use earbuds to put the drops in the corners to stick the popsicle sticks.

To make the box lay 2 sticks down in the same direction (parallel) stick 2 on top so that it forms a square. continue sticking 2 to the highest corners until you get the size you want.

Use small drops of glue, it does along way.

Wait for the square to dry before you move it. To make the bottom lay down a layer of glue across the highest popsicle stick and then neatly line up all your bottom sticks.

For the lid lay down the same amount of sticks you used for the bottom and glue 2 rows of popsicle sticks on top to hold everything together. Leave to dry.

Once dry you can decorate the box further with stickers. We used color sticks for the box and painted the lids popsicle sticks for a better color before making the box.

Add some little trinkets and the box is ready!
